Remembering George Floyd – Five Years Later

Today marks five years since George Floyd’s life was taken an event that shook not only Minneapolis but the world. His death forced a long-overdue reckoning with injustice, and sparked a movement rooted in the belief that every human being deserves dignity, safety, and respect.

I remember those days vividly. The pain and unrest that followed in South Minneapolis felt like a collective heartbreak. In the North Loop, we held our breath and many boarding up windows, preparing for the unknown, unsure if the destruction would move in our direction. But what I remember most is not fear its how our community came together.

We showed up for each other. My son and I woke up early and went to South Mpls to help clean the streets and were amazed many of the streets had already been cleaned.

We listened, we learned, and many of us asked hard questions about how we could be part of real change.

This day isn’t just about remembering what happened it’s about honoring George Floyd by continuing the work for justice, equity, and understanding.

Let’s not forget. Let’s keep going. - Joe Grunnet
